Origin Integrated Studios: Bringing Innovative Software Solutions to Healthcare

In an interview with APAC CIOoutlook, Kenneth Kee shares some insights on Origin’s robust solutions, cutting-edge technology they use, and the unrivaled services they bring to the industry.
What according to you are the challenges that impeded the early adoption of Electronic Medical Record solutions and Hospital Information Systems (HIS)?
In the early wave of EMR adoption, some hospitals had explored the premature, expensive EMR solutions available in the market, which proved inadequate. In certain instances, HIS vendors failed to integrate with their proposed third-party EMR product and accommodate the required customizations to meet the user requirements. Even to this day, some of these hospitals are incurring the consequences of deploying rudimentary hospital systems and are struggling with the appointed vendors who are not able to deliver effective EMR solutions tailored to their needs.
Please elaborate on your products and the technology underpinning them.
To streamline healthcare operations and improve the quality of care, Origin offers its intuitive EMR system and HIS, developed with over 10 years of industry experience. Origin’s products are developed on Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (JAVA EE)—the standard in community-driven enterprise software. The user interfaces are developed using the latest in web technologies: HTML5 and CSS3. Origin EMR comes with iNTERFACEWARE IGUANA HL7 interface engine, which is used by more than 800 healthcare providers and vendors and is supported by Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
Could you talk about the comprehensive services that you deliver to your clients?
We at Origin are proposing a joint requirement information gathering approach to building a reliable, sophisticated HIS and EMR solution for our customers. Drawing on its industry experience and talented resources from the R&D team, Origin will provide customers with consultancy and expertise on developing features and functionalities while gathering information on specification requirements. On adopting this implementation approach, our customers will be deeply involved throughout the implementation process, resulting in faster deployment times and accurate delivery compared to the traditional method of gathering system requirements through multiple interviews.
Together with our customers, we plan and manage projects by implementing the management practices deemed necessary to achieve project objectives.
Origin also coordinates overall project activities with customers while providing support, change management, and communications throughout the project duration. As part of our implementation service, we offer systems training to IT systems administrators, trainers, and users. Further, we design and perform system configuration, including documentation of the final blueprint. Origin also conducts integration testing, coordinates the User Acceptance Test (UAT), and supports key users in performing the UAT. Catering to post go-live maintenance requirements, Origin brings in comprehensive application software maintenance support services including software patches, updates, and technical advice either remotely or on-site if necessary.

With dedication and teamwork, we believe we can build anything, on time.
How is Origin incorporating artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) in its solutions to bolster their capabilities?
In collaboration with its partner, Origin is rolling out automation solutions including mobile applications and advanced, portable patient monitoring systems to enable hospital facilities to meet growing digitalization needs of patients. We are driven by the goal to boost patient-centric care, provide more value-based services, and offer personalized medicine by less human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. With IoMT-smart sensors or medical devices that can detect issues in real time, embedded in healthcare solutions along with AI and machine learning capabilities, caregivers receive early notifications on impending patient complications.
Our EMR Early Warning Score (EWS) module supports interfacing with IoMT, reinforcing the potential of both clinical and remote home-based nursing care environments. The IoMT-powered solution will not only drive down labor costs but also take the burden off the shoulders of medical practitioners who invest significant time in repetitive tasks such as verifying health insurance and checking vital signs. With remote monitoring through connected wearable devices, it will allow constant monitoring at home, shortening patients' stay in the hospital. With smart connected monitoring devices linked to patient records, pharmacy systems, nursing staff schedules, and more, the sensors in these smart devices can collect data, which can be analyzed to determine whether to trigger a silent alarm for a noncritical event or an audible alarm for a life-critical event. In this way, we can increase confidence in alarms, reduce workload, and drive timely action while reducing false alarms and alert fatigue.
IoMT allows to proactively trigger an alert when the devices are near failure or in need for routine maintenance along with facilitating patient monitoring, optimized staffing, asset tracking, supply and drug management. The high volume and broad scope of IoMT data make it possible to develop powerful learning and adaptive diagnostic and healing models. Besides, IoMT technology can integrate and analyze diverse types of diagnostically relevant data and move it to clinical decision support systems to assist providers with a complete picture of each patient’s health.
What does the future hold for your organization?
