How Do you Build a Dream Team with Technology?

Olivia Jenkins, Senior Regional Director of Clinical Services, Navion Senior Living

I recently did a pilot at one of the Assisted Living communities I support with a new electronic medication record (eMAR) and electronic health care record (EHR).

This was a huge step for this community because they were still using paper in many of their processes. What I learned during that time, this new technology bonded and solidified that team. I like to describe this experience as Building the Dream Team! That is winning in healthcare. Not only is this community more advanced, but the resident outcomes are going to exceed previous outcomes. During this process, this team crossed over into other departments when building out this entire medical record software. We chose a program that all departments could record daily tasks required for the daily operations of the community. Including the entire community in this project helped break down the organizational silos and share valuable ideas, challenges, and best practices.

Not one person solely built this plan out. We effectively engaged frontline team members and department managers to harness their collective intelligence. That’s how you build, The Dream Team!

The frontline healthcare workers are the heart and soul of any healthcare facility. When businesses take the time to invest in their employees through innovation, they are investing in their bottom line.

Knowledge is power. Giving the tools for success to your frontline team members also pays back in improved patient outcomes. Creating a culture of innovation sets you apart from your competition. In the current job market in healthcare, what are you offering differently from the healthcare facility down the street? If everyone is using the same eMAR/EHR system, that becomes mundane and robotic. There is no challenge or desire to do something different and better!

As operators, you should create an atmosphere that inspires your employees every hour that is actively working. Productivity is higher, and outcomes are better.

Innovation is a broad term; you must search your organization and see where innovation is lacking. In the company I work for, it was eMAR/EHR. No matter how you decide to innovate, you must implement an idea management process, support it with an engaging platform, and let the brainpower of your “Dream Team” make the magic happen. Making your team feel valued by asking for their ideas. Ask them, “How do you see us growing?” What is happening in the market surrounding you?

Are you just doing what everyone else is doing? Track the outcomes of their progress. Data is HUGE in showing and praising accomplishments.

So, what are your organizational innovation goals for 2023? Remember, decision-making starts with your frontline team members. Build your Dream Team, and the rest will fall into place. Break down the silos and let everyone have a voice. As the healthcare markets get tighter, you must set yourself apart from everyone else. Become “New and Different” in your own regional market. The most successful healthcare companies are the ones empowering their frontline team members with training and education and giving them the tools to be successful.
